Tentang Islam

Islam, seperti yang diajarkan Rasulullah, berisi ajaran-ajaran seperti ini: hormatilah sesama kita tanpa memandang agama. Muliakanlah orang lain, juga muliakanlah tetangga, muliakanlah tamu. Waktu kita mengikuti perintah Rasulullah, tidak ada yang peduli bahwa itu adalah nilai-nilai Islam. Orang-orang Islam tertentu sudah lebih dahulu mengambil posisi untuk mendefinisikan Islam: agama yang sibuk mengurusi babi dan empat istri.

Barangkali selama ini memang tidak ada yang merusak citra Islam, selain umat muslim sendiri. Jelas, Islam terlalu bagus untuk dihancurkan agama-agama lain. Kadang-kadang jengkel juga sama orang-orang yang semacam itu. Ngakunya umat Muhammad, tapi kok radikal, vulgar, dan kolotnya minta ampun.

Dulu ada cerita menarik. Dua pengembara, satu menunggang keledai, dan satu menuntunnya, masuk kota Jerusalem, beberapa abad lalu. Penguasa kota menyambut penunggang keledai. Tapi si penunggang berkata, “Aku hanya pengawal. Ini khalifah Umar, yang sedang menuntun keledai. Kami bergiliran menunggangi keledai itu.”

Maka khalifah Umar lalu dibawa ke pusat kota yang baru dibebaskan dari pendudukan Romawi. Di hadapannya terhampar sebuah katedral yang anggun. “Biarkan aku shalat di luar saja,” kata Umar, “Kalau tidak umatku akan terbiasa merampas gereja untuk dijadikan masjid. Itu terlarang.” Lalu Umar menyusun sistem pemerintahan Jerusalem yang mengakui hak-hak segala agama, menggantikan sistem Romawi yang diskriminatif.

Alangkah indahnya Islam, kalau penganutnya mau berpegang teguh pada apa yang ditetapkan dalam kitab Allah, seperti yang telah dilakukan Umar ibn Khatthab. Perang, dalam Qur`an, hanya diperbolehkan untuk menjaga agar orang bebas beribadah menurut keyakinan masing-masing.

Mahatma Gandhi dulu pernah berkata, “Orang-orang Eropa di Afrika Selatan cemas oleh kedatangan Islam. Islam memberikan peradaban kepada Spanyol, Islam membawa cahaya obor kepada Maroko dan mengabarkan kepada dunia ajaran-ajaran persaudaraan. Orang-orang Eropa di Afrika Selatan takut atas kedatangan Islam, karena orang-orang Islam menuntut persamaan dengan ras kulit putih. Orang-orang Eropa boleh takut. Ketakutan mereka memang beralasan.”

Apakah sampai sekarang orang-orang muslim masih berani membawa agamanya menjadi dasar bagi persaudaraan dan persamaan? Kenapa umat Islam sekarang nggak bisa sebijaksana Rasulullah SAW dan para sahabatnya?

Fallacy of Circular Reasoning

Orang Tibet sangat menghargai garam. Orang Arab menganggap air lebih berharga dari minyak. Orang Inca malah membuang emas ke danau El Dorado setiap tahunnya. Berharga atau tidak, lebih pada state of mind secara psikologis saja. Tak beda dengan tembakau atau batu dari Pulau Yap.

Kemajuan teknologi sudah bisa membuat berlian dengan karbon yang bahab bakunya didapat dari gas alam. Dengan penambangan antariksa, membawa satu asteroid kecil saja sama dengan seribu kali jumlah emas di dunia. Selain industri elektronik, emas praktis tidak punya nilai riil lagi.
